We are the Grand Sultan's of Excess established in 1993! Have you not heard of us?! We are one of the most famous Krewes of the 20th century participating each year in the Soulard Mardi Gras Grand Parade.
Each year, Mardi Gras Inc chooses a theme to which all Krewes are to align. The Grand Sultans of Excess then vote amongst our Krewe, on a subtheme to the main parade theme. If we’re lucky, then our first choice is approved by Mardi Gras Inc.
We also honor one of our own every year as “The Grand Sultan”, by having him or her ride in the float throne during the grand parade. This honor is decided upon by those that have already been honored in previous years.
Our mission remains the same - to create unforgettable experiences, radiate positivity, and embrace the spirit of celebration. Year after year, we unite in the pursuit of fun and camaraderie, leaving an indelible mark on Soulard Mardi Gras festivities.
We always accomplish being of Excess. In years past, we have won awards too! One was Best Costumes!
In the beginning, there were some very close friends that would get together every year to enjoy the St. Louis Soulard Mardi Gras parade(s). These friends would watch from the sidelines, drinking libations while the few floats would pass by.
The Krewes in those floats threw colorful beaded necklaces to the crowd. Those Krewes would be overcome with joy as they watched the young ladies proactively “show” their great appreciation for those forthcoming beads.
It was great fun. However, that group of close friends needed more than to watch from the sidelines. They needed to be part of that parade....
This is the way I remember the start. We were all at the parade, Mark (Botterman) was taking pictures, and the rest of us were doing our bit to support AB, sitting on the curb drinking, when a guy went by in a black leather jacket, fishnets, and a thong, I am sure that Mark took a picture of that.
Then some people in a pickup truck went by, and we said, “We could do better than that!” It was incredibly warm for that time of the year too. So it was beautiful, but there was only a crowd in front of some of the bars, not all the way down the parade route.
Stuart remembered; we looked up, watching the parade with our ABs, and said, “They are having more fun than we are! Let’s start a group.” And the name The Grand Sultans of Excess was blurted out.
So that following year, 1993, the tradition would begin.
